A lot of people new to Goldmaking want a 'Silver bullet', an item they can sell and get rich. The problem is, there is no silver bullet, and heres why:

Cost of mats is different on each server

price items sell for is different on each server

number of people competing on a given market is different on each server

Now the reason these are so important is simple: an item that is profitable for me, that costs me 75g to make and sells for 100g, might cost you 120g and sell for 90g. And if only 7 of something sell in a day, and theres 11 people posting it, you won't make money.

So most of the posts you find here, are telling you HOW to find your silver bullet, how to FIND the items you want to sell. And yes, you will have to find it yourself. What works for me will probably not work for you. I'm not trying to 'save the good stuff for myself'. I'm telling you that you need to find your own niche market. Your niche market will need to fulfill the following criterion:

It costs you less to make/buy than it sells for

There is demand for the item

There are not already too many people selling the item

There are a lot of suggested markets, things that have worked for others that you might try. Markets that are not well served on most servers. Markets with high enough demand to support multiple suppliers. But in the end you will need to see if these things work on your server.

Bah! There are silver bullets.

and for 4 monthly payments of only $40 you too can have the secret silver bullet.... blah blah

No, but seriously, the silver bullet is really this simple.... and it works on each and every server... It even works in real life.... Ready for it? Sell lots of items you make a profit on.

Am I going to tell you what those items are?

Sure... for 4 monthly payments.... of.... It depends on your competition, your situation, your costs, your selling prices, what professions you have, how lazy you are etc. etc.... ahem... I mean, depends on your server....

With gold, you can either be lucky or you can work hard for it.

All this talk about "Silver Bullets" is making me kind of nervous.

Back on topic: The silver bullet is not a direct answer, its the strategy. And for those playing at home, this is the strategy:

A = How much does something cost you to aquire/make?
B = How much are people willing to pay for the item?
If B > A, then you will make a profit*!

A and B can be anything you want, work it out! When someone says "OMG EVERYONE THIS IS A WINNER, DO THIS...", take it as more of a suggestion, and plug it into the formula under your conditions. If it works for you on your server, then go for it! If not, look for other 'suggestions' or investigate yourself!

Like any sane being, I'm cautious of all bullets and stakes, be they silver, lead, wooden or otherwise.
