I see stories (including the story of Gevlon) about making decent cash off of Northern Spices. I know Gevlon doesn't farm, I can't imagine him doing the daily cooking quest, so how does this work?

Is it:

- buy low/sell high?
- stack splitting?
- or simply figuring out in which cases (price of cooked item) > (price of northern spices) + (price of meat/fish)

On my server, the Spice sells for more than the resulting food does, so there's not at lot of room to play games on the AH. Every now and then, someone dumps a bunch of cheap Spice on the market, but it's been months since I've seen any. I still have a few stacks of Fish Feasts in the bank - everyone wants them dropped in raids, but no one wants to spend any money on them.

While they don't require spices, you can consider stack splitting the emotion foods. I'd highly recommend advertising in trade that you have singles up, though.

Any specific favorites you care to share? ;)

Right now I've got my former main (current smelting/BS robot) sitting at 450 cooking and not doing anything with it. I'd love to put him to work on the cooking side of things to pocket some extra G.

Last time I looked (Friday):

Cooking level = 450
Number of cooking recipes in my list = 60 (including all Northrend, except Black Jelly)
Number of cooking recipes profitable according to LSW = 1
Profit per piece on that food (it was the northrend strength food) = 20 C

In short, the market is worthless. Everyone either has cooking or is leveling it and dumping cheap food on the market. Of course, your server may vary. That said, I can find cheap prices on pygmy suckerfish to make Guru's Elixir, so the collapse of the food market is a gain for the elixir production market. There is also a good market for certain raw meats/fish, but that is very volatile and dependent on who is dumping what at the time.

There are some situational opportunities for profit from cooking (children's fest...) but the current market suggest making money elsewhere.

I have had some luck with Dalaran Clam Chowder, one of the few that I can make a profit after buying the meat (1g50s to buy, sells for 2g40s). It also doesn't use Spice, so it's one those freebies to scan the AH for.

If I remember correctly, Gevlon did the cooking daily because the reward was not bad. 10min or so to do, and will reward 10 spices (guaranteed) or 10 more (by chance, via the award that pops out from the pouch) and a few odd ones.
10 spices is worth 15-20g.

Currently, my server's AH have em at around 1.30g/spice but I do my dailies to collect spices for an art project so I'm not selling em :3

Just like in all other professions, it's knowing the niche markets--I never get constant income from cooking but I keep my auctioneer snatching up low-priced dragonfin and rhino meat and northern spices. The choke point is actually the raw food and not the spices for my server. But the dragonfin is for the strength food and the agility food which sell pretty consistently around 6g per piece, and the rhino meat is for the armor penetration food which fluctuates wildly, doesn't sell as well but has a higher profit margin. The overall profits aren't huge, but I probably make 300 per week on this, 500 in a good week.

Lately the "emotion foods" (bad clams, tasty cupcake, etal) are showing some profit. Not a lot, but some. Post stacks of one for those achievement junkies.
