How's that look with the subscribe button to the left and below the links?

Personally i'd put it on the right side, above the gold blogs, cause it's more intuitive that way. But it's not bad where it is.

About the font, well, try out changing it all, if you don't like it change just the posts, if you don't like it just leave it the way it is :P experimenting is the way to go!

In order to get the site components to fit would it be better to remove the right column and keep the content the same width, as well as maybe show 6 or so posts on the front page?

Or would it be better to shrink the middle area?

Thanks for the feedback

The follows is an aesthetic opinion, and therefor may be worthless.

Currently you have the widths hardcoded for each of the three columns. It makes sense that the first column is a constant size.

Assuming I read the styles correctly (I'm no expert):

I'd suggest removing:
max-width:1124px from #outer-wrapper,
and adding:
max-width:146px to rightsidebar-wrapper and possibly increasing
width:25% in rightsidebar-wrapper to make it less subject to squeezing

I think that'd keep the right bar from growing larger than it currently is, while allowing the other 2 columns to adjust to the size of the browser window. You might also add to the main-wrapper something like:
min-width:450px to keep it from being squeezed ridiculously

My marked up 0.02 & commentary:

the text:

make your nav bar at the top 100% width, it will look cleaner. also - a little delineation between buttons would be nice, although not required.
create a secondary navigation / title area under the nav bar and keep its height consistent all the way across.
add some fill behind the links. this just gives some visual seperation and focus to the content.

+5 million internets on your willingness to take design advice / critique

I was unclear and i appologize - make your blog date piece one column on the side of your choosing. make your links the other column on the opposite side. most places i see the dates on the right - but it is entirely up to you and makes no aesthetic difference to me as a viewer.

so you have (in crude internet arts):

entry date | blog content | links
entry date | blog content | links
entry date | blog content | links

or

links | blog content | entry dates
links | blog content | entry dates
links | blog content | entry dates

This site is a community, I like that everyone wants to jump in and help redesign the site :D. I really appreciate it as I suck at artistic design!
