1. There is a player on my server who is known notoriously for his trade chat trolling. Once every week or so he will put a plan letter on the AH with no buy out and advertise it as a genuine autograph. I pop my letters in there with a ten gold buy out, and they sell. His no buyout autograph has gone up to 150g the last few times he did this. (my letters have a cute message implying an ebay like rippoff of genuine autograph not endorsed or acknowledged by the original celebrity)

2. This took me about an hour, but this is something I did just for fun ... not necessarily for massive profit. I spent time googling for World of Warfraft joks, and wrote 1 joke in each plain letter. I then posted them on the AH for 25g each and advertised in trade chat, "I am failing at being a priest so I am going to try being a comedian for a while. Buy one of my jokes on the AH now. Search for plain letter" and I will tell a joke or two I didn't use in my letters. I will continue to say things like "If you though that was funny, check out my a-list material on the AH now" I have done this twice, but now I have copy cats and it's not worth the trouble. I had 25 jokes each time.

3. Again a little time consuming but I made 'work orders' with each plain letter saying 'return this with xxx of stock for xxx gold' 1 item was Bloodstone gems for 25g a stack. Another was cobalt ore for 25g a stack. I placed 25 of them on the AH for 8g each, and they all sold. A few people returned the items for gold. At the time I could turn the cobalt into approximately 80-90g a stack and I was buying all I could for 20g a stack. So they would buy the work order for 8g and sell me Cobalt for 25g so basicly 3g cheaper than I was buying it out for. Bloodstone was similar as well as all of the items I put on plain letter. I imagine the players felt good about a 100% sale with no fee, and that 25g for something that was normally 20g was enticing.

4. (haven't done this, but thoought about it) Create 'hints' to a secret phase or password. Crate a channel and advertise the first person to join gets 1000g. Then when they start whispering you for the password tell them hints are on the plain letters you posted in the AH. Me and the spammer from number one have considered this, but we don't want to cross any lines that would get our accounts closed.

These games are meant to make the players enjoy themselves and have fun. I meant to have fun when I did it. I wasn't sure if this was something that should be under it's own heading or under the lottery post. I guess a moderator can move it if they feel like it's the same thing as lottery. I personally don't think these are as shady as lottery and it's creating a bunch of customers with the product they were buying, it's not creating a bunch of losers. Number 4 might not be fun for everyone that played, which is why I haven't done it. Keep in mind creating a plain letter puts your character's name on it.

Another related 'fun' post is placing an item on the AH for a few hundred gold when it's well known item for vending for silver. Then spending twenty minutes advertising it in trade, selling it up, poking fun at players selling stuff for ridiculous prices. Get as many people talking about it as possible, make as many jokes as you can. Create an extravagant story about why the item is worth 200g. Claim to be trying to buy epic riding or bags or a chopper. Mimic others known for trade chat macros. Just get as many people in trade aware that you are selling the item for a crazy price and make sure no one believes you are being serious, everyone has to believe it's a joke. Then players who enjoy the humor will buy the item as part of the joke. Again this is really about having fun, not about profit. So if it doesn't sell make sure you had fun trying. You know there is a guy in New York (usa) selling an omelet for 1,000 dollars? Do you think there is anything you can do to an omelet that makes it worth 1,000 dollars? The whole thing is all about hype, advertising and marketing.

There is a guy on my server that says "You know why they call it an Xbox 360? Because when you see it you make a 360 and walk away" And obviously he just does it to get everyone in trade chat talking about how a 360 is a complete turn etc.

Sock, you are a master marketer. This is some good stuff.

One thing we all deal with is lack of product differentiation. But your product lets you sell something unique. So I was thinking about doing this, and maybe color coding it with different gift wraps.

Some of these ideas are just pure genius!

I might try something like this tonight, maybe put together a little "scavenger" hunt for the people... First to bring me x amount of this, this and this wins 100g, second place, 50g, 3rd place, 25g..

Well maybe.. that one might count as a lotto tactic, hence against the ToS.. Thoughts?

This is an awesome idea. I might have to try it. It's also a good way to find out who has gathering profs and possibly convert some of them into farmers. >_>

I love wrapping paper, but what you are allowed to put in wrapping paper is so limited, then you can't even do much with it.

Once a player upset me. I bought a white item from the vendor and wrapped it and mailed it COD for 300g. I said "Hey, sorry it took me so long to get this back to you. I hope you enjoy it and good luck killing Ragnoras with it"

The next morning there was a very angry letter in my mail box. Very Very angry... anyway I wrote him back and asked if he would still sell me a Deadly Blunderbuss for 300g or should I buy one from the people that undercut him for 80g and keep the change. And that set him off... A GM had to talk to me about it.

I am really sad you can't do much with Wrapped stuff. I thought it would be awesome to wrap up a bunch of item for Christmas and set the withdraw to 1 stack per person, then let all my friends withdraw a present each day. Some of it was recipes, a couple of 245 epics, Cut epic gems, Jeweler's Kits, Grinding Stone, Skinning Knight, Mining Pick, some fun stuff, enchanted pearls (complete trash on my realm) and just about anything else I could find.. I wrapped it all up and opened my bank and spent about a while moving everything to the other tabs.

You can't put a wrapped item in the guild bank :( Completely bummed me out. It took me forever to mail all those gifts to my friends and the whole pick the gift thing was ruined.

Also bummer: You can't wrap coal :(

This was going to be for my next attempt, but copy cats have killed the joy. One of them put the same joke on a few hundred letters. Kinda pisses me off a little. Anyway for your enjoyment I present what I googles. I found a site called wowbash where I found a lot of these. Hearing your customers tell their jokes in trade chat is awesome! REALLY REALLY VERY AWESOME! It makes other people want to buy a letter and it lets you know people are having fun. People who tell their joke in trade chat are really complimenting you, the product they bought is making them happy. They sent me lots of whispers, talked about in trade for a few days... came up with jokes I didn't write. It was really great. I didn't really make a whole lot off the letters, certainly not as much as I could doing anything else, but it was fun.

Joke #1
Q: A tauren is standing in a river, surrounded by 20 Gnome Mages that specialise in Frost Magic. How will he get out?
A: Wet and cold.

Joke #2
Q: How many Gnomes does it take to paint a house?
A: Depends on how hard you throw them

Joke #3
Q: What do undead tauren say?
A: Boo!

Joke #4
Q: Why to orcs make the best gardeners?
A: They have green thumbs

Joke #5
Q: What do you call a pool full of paladins?
A: A bubble bath

Joke #6
Q: Why don't warriors have thier weapons enchanted with intellecence?
A: They don't want thier weapons to be smarter than them

Joke #7
A Druid in Dire Bear form gose into a bar and says "I will have a ....
...
...
...
...
...
... ... pint of beer, please."

The bartender asks "Why the huge pause?"

The druid responds "I don't know, I have always had them."

Joke #8
Q: How many murlocks does it take to change a light bulb?
A: mrgglrgglrmmrl

Joke #9
Q: Why did the taurn wear Je'Tze's Bell around his neck?
A: His horns didn't work.

Joke #10
Q: How many paladins does it take to chance a light bulb?
A: two... one to hold the ladder and the other to uphold the light!

Joke #11
Q: Why did the paladin move to Undercity?
A: He thought he was Turning Undead

Joke #12
Did you hear that the Lich King released a new calendar for 2010? It's selling well but his days are numbered.

Joke #13
Q: How many GM's does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
A: None, it's working as intended.

Joke #14
Q: How many rogues does it take to kill a paladin?
A: One to attack him and one to wait for him at the inn.

Joke #15
Q: How many gnome does it take to install a light bulb?
A: One, but it will also play music, tell time and make toast.

Joke #16
An angry gnome mage walks into a bar. The bartend asks what he'll have to drink. The gnome mage replies "I CAN MAKE MY OWN DRINKS!!! LEAVE ME ALONE!!!"

Offended the bartender says "No reason to be short"

Joke #17
Q: How many gnomes does it take to change a light bulb?
A: Not really sure, we can't stack them high enough

Joke #18
Q: Why didn't the undead cross the road with the chicken?
A: He didn't have the guts

Joke #19
Did you hear abot the tauren and the gnome who escaped from the Stockades? The guards are searching high and low for them.

Joke #20
A level 80 gnome level 20 for some gold. Why, when you can easily get it yourself. The gnome replies "I am sorry, I seem to be a little short"

Joke #21
Q: What do you get if you cross a ram with a murloc?
A: Draenei

Joke #22
Q: Why didn't Illidan eat his dinner?
A: It was not prepared!

Joke #23

If it work's I guess go for it, but I am not so keen on it for a couple of reasons. First, only the first person gets the big prize. Many people don't compete in weekly Fishing games because of that. Speculating here, but a player will see 100g and think oh xxx is worth 100g... but he is only buying form the first person. If it's worth 100g I am not interested in selling it for 25g so I am not even going to try.

Second, it sounds A LOT like the lotto scam. If you sold your plain letters like I suggested there is a reason. Because it is EXACTLY like the lotto scam. If you wanted to try this the way you are talking about, give the work orders away for free. But how do you think it's really going to work out? If you said in trade "Buying cobalt 100g for the first stack, 50g for the second stack and 25g for the rest" how many stacks do you think you would buy? My guess... two stacks at the very most. (if it's a game, then just say first one wins and don't make them look for trade goods, pick odd items like a brooms or pitch fork. If you want trade goods then don't treat it like a game.)

Back in the states there is a place called xxx. They sell delicious roast beef sandwiches. They used to be 1$ for one. Then they marked them up to 3$ for exactly the same sandwich, and then they started putting less Roast Beef on them. They started mass mailing coupons to people where you could buy the Roast Beef Sandwich 5 for 5$, then they would go months with them for 3$ and no coupons. People stopped eating the Roast Beef Sandwiches.

The problem was, for the longest time the sandwich was 1$. It was burned into the customers minds. When the marked them up to 3$ people started saying 'I am not going to pay 2 extra dollars for that'. Then when it looked like it might just blow over, because the sandwiches are really delicious... the cut back on the Roast Beef.

Then the coupons. They sent out these awesome coupons, that allowed you to buy a 1$ sandwich (with less meat) for amazingly 1$. And they sent out SO many coupons, SO often, to SO many people and put them in the newspapers that EVERYONE had the coupons. And the Permanently burned into the minds of thier customers these are 1$ sandwiches. Then the stopped making the coupons. The last one I saw was 5 for 6.95$. I didn't buy one. There is absolutely no way in hell I am paying 3$ for a 1$ sandwich.

I don't know how it stands these days but Burger King used to have a policy that they would not send anymore 1$ whopper coupons out anymore because it hurt the value of the flagship product. Last I heard the best coupon you could get for a whopper was buy one get one free.

Anyway, if you make your customers believe that something is worth one thing and then try to sell it for more, it won't work. If you make them believe it's worth one thing then try to buy it for less it won't work. Your customer is going to buy or sell at what they think something is worth. They may be flexible a little, but more or less they are going to stick very close to that value they have in mind.
