What's needed for this:
Any AH addon that allows you to sort by stack size
Any AH addon that allows you to find prices

What you're going to do:
1) Identify an item that is stackable. This includes materials, enchanted scrolls and armor kits
2) Search that item and see what the least sized stack is. Note the prices.
3) Resort and see what the top sized stack is. Note those prices.
4) Now look at your notes and do some math thinking. If you were to buy the fuller stacks and break them into singles, what did you pay per unit? Are there single stacks already? Would you lose money by matching those prices? Is there room to move the prices up?
5) Make sure you don't flood that new market. Plan to sell over a few sessions.
6) Go back to step #1, but for a different product.

How this works:
It's much cheaper to buy soda by the case, but you still use vending machines, right? Sometimes folks only want (or need) one item. Buying a stack for a single item either wastes money or wastes time (not everybody wants to resell the excess, but if you're reading this, you probably would).

Good info Sparks ... one thing to add ...

The new Auctioneer provides the ability to show prices as "price per unit" ... so some of the mathimagic isn't even required anymore :)

cheers

Before I discovered professions, this was how I purchased several BOEs and Epic Flying/Cold Weather Flying on my lvl 80 DK.

Noooo! Next you're going to tell me that hostess fruit pies don't solve the world's problems next :(

You're right, but I'm trying to make it a bit more generic for those that don't use auctioneer or similar addons. At some point I might even end up trying auctionator or one of the alternative addons...

I hate auctioneer just because it eats up memory like none other. I only use it when I have to.

I haven't reconfigured mine in a while, but there should be options to have it load only at the AH. Or do you have it set up like that already?

I was playing around with the idea of flipping flasks. On Sunday before raid peak time I had a look at flasks of endless rage. There were 29 on the AH at the time going for 22-24g listed as singles. I decided to buy them all out and relist them in stacks of 4 (and one stack of 5) at 32g each as an experiment.

My thinking is that any decent raid is going to run for about 4 hours, so by not giving them a choice to buy a single, raiders had to buy a stack of 4 (and paying more for each as they had no choice). This collapsed the number of auctions for flasks from 29 down to 7, effectively reducing the supply in terms of individual auctions and reducing the chance to be undercut.

I believed that the chance of someone buying the stack, splitting it up and reselling them would also be low as you wouldn't buy an overpriced stack, split it up and try and sell it for even more.

I sold all seven stacks within an hour and a half and I'm keen to retest this theory again, maybe Wednesday. :)

I guess, if you can't find a vending machine for a single can, you have to pay for the case!

Yep. I have a thread on that in the speculation forum. Please check it out as we're interested in testing something similar to this.

Now I'm really curious. Did you do follow up on that? The other thread would have you buying the singles, stacking them and reselling with the premise that somebody would buy the stack, split it and sell at another markup. I'm curious if that happened at normal prices and if that shows that flasks may be slightly undervalued on your server.

I read the thread and while it is similar, the method is different. The other thread is about flipping a stack at a slight premium so that other buyers can resell the stack by splitting it up. This approach is about buying all the items available, and reselling in stacks at a much higher price forcing the buyer to buy the whole lot.

Another example of the strategy is Weapon III vellums. I scanned the AH and saw eight Weapon III Vellums trading at 8g each and no Armor III Vellums. I decided that while Auctioneer was telling me that the Weapon Vellums were overpriced, I believed that in real terms they were still 'cheap'. So I bought them out, doubled the price and relisted them as a stack for 130g. The stack sold the next day.

So whats the difference?

Well like the flasks, vellums are a consumable (I also believe that raid food falls into this category). The idea is that yes you have more than you might need right now, but you will use it soon so it is unlikely that they will reappear on the AH.

This can also works for items where supply is low. I've used this method to sell odd or leftover items from powerlevelling professions or rep grinds such as bijous. Although I've only done it subconciously and not actively tried to corner markets in this way.
