First off, I know I’m meant to fill out the questionnaire to allow any helpers get a better idea of what I’m doing, and please do not take my not answering to be laziness or disinterest, I’m just not sure how relevant some of the questions are. If anyone insists I do it then of course I’ll try, but for now I was hoping just to try and explain my situation and get some advice without being too specific.

I’ve recently come back to WoW after about a year away and my realm isn’t what it used to be. I’m currently on Eonar (eu/Normal) with both Horde and Alliance characters. I was a casual player (my definition of casual being a few hours at the weekends) but since being back I have been playing a few hours a day. I may go back to being more casual in future.
I used to play my 85 Horde Belf Hunter as my main, with the leatherworking profession. I made gold easily farming and selling cloth and leather, and then switched over to herbs + potions which I found produced a steady income.

Now, it seems the realm is dead, I couldn’t even sell 10 stacks of 10 wool on AH for 2g each, which used to go almost as quick as I put it up. To cut a long story short more than half what I put up for AH isn’t selling, whether it be cloth or herbs or various sundries. It’s not just that, but even when I look on AH for things I want, ranging from meat to enchants to weapons, there’s very little about.

Eonar/Alliance is a different story. The AH has, not lots, but a decent amount to offer, and although cloth isn’t a huge money maker it still sells. I have a Draenei Hunter (lv30, skinning + leatherworking) and a Draenei Warrior (lv17, mining + blacksmithing). It seems that the population of Eonar has gone down (I think it’s now being advertised for newbies as a low population realm), with Alliance outweighing Horde by quite a bit.

So what I’d like to get advice on, is should I stick with my Belf Hunter, which allows me to farm greater areas due to higher level but with very little AH activity? Or should I switch to one of my Alliance chars, which I would have to level up or be limited to lower level areas but has more AH activity? OR, is it worth creating a new character on a more populated realm? And if so, which race/profession/class is best?

In terms of gold, I’m not really after a specific amount, nor am I after all the gold in the world. Just enough for a steady income, I was on 500g per day at one point, which went down to 100g, but even if it was as little as say 50g a day I’m not fussed.

At the moment I’m leaning more towards starting on a new highly populated realm, possibly with a warrior, and thinking that maybe enchanting or inscription might be a good way to go judging on research I’ve done, but I’m not sure. Being a casual player, I was never very good at Dungeons although I enjoyed them, and never actually did any Raids because I wasn’t experienced enough and nobody wanted to take me on, so although I’m open to doing them to get gold it might not be the most fruitful option.

Sorry I’ve waffled on, I hope there’s enough info here and I hope someone can give me some advice.

Wall of text crits for over 9000

Your realm isn't realy empty, it's just that they're all playing the Mists Of Pandaria Beta at the moment :D
Should you plan to make gold, start stocking up on everything and anything leveling-related (like that wool cloth there)
I have characters on a realm that went from nearly "full" PVP to "new" NORMAL and back to nearly "full" (Vek'Nilash EU)
and leaving a packrat behind has made me a lot of gold on that realm.

You see an empty AH, I see a market that's hungry for supplies, it's just a matter of figuring out which supplies it needs.

EDIT: Just in case you do start a new character on a new realm -> Mining/Herbalism till max-level, then switch to the desired professions.
You can save a lot of gold by setting asside what you need to level those professions and selling off any extras you gathered.
