I've played WoW since Vanilla. And I've always just scraped by gold-wise. I had been told that crafting was a "gold sink" and that the only way to reliably MAKE money was to farm. I made sure I had enough to cover my repair bills, and would sometimes save up for a big purchase (epic flying, etc), but as I don't really enjoy farming, it was normal for me to have under 1k gold (sometimes MUCH less than 1k) across all my toons.

Near the end of wrath, as I was farming to pay for epic flight on my second 80, I started talking to a guildie about gold making strategies. This was a guy who always had cash- all his toons had epic flight, several had mechano hogs, he would toss stacks of flasks, etc in the guild bank and would never accept payment (he actually supplied all the flasks for my raid group during our ICC campeign and refused payment saying he didn't need it). He suggested I check out a podcast called "Call to Auction".

I listened to most of the episodes, and decided to put what I had learned into play when cata hit. Step 1 was maxing Blacksmithing on my main (was low 400s at cata launch). As soon as that was done, I started posting belt buckles and PVP gear on the AH. All profits from that went to purchasing mats for leveling a fresh JC. I hit 500 on my JC 2 weeks ago. At that point, I had less than 1k gold across all my toons. As of this morning, I am now sitting on 21k. I've also powerleveled a transmute spec alchemist, as well as purchasing a couple fairly expensive vanity pets for my fiance. If I'd been hanging on to all my profits, I'd probably be sitting on closer to 30k. And I haven't had to farm a damn thing. I've gone from being the guy always asking in guild if there was a JC available for a cut, to being able to supply services to my guild.

My current goal is to use a portion of my profits to level 1 of every crafting profession to cap (and fill any remaining slots with alchemists for more cooldowns to burn). I've also begun toying with the idea of trying to gold-cap my main.

So yes... massive thanks to everything you have taught me. You have completely revolutionized the way I make money in game.
