With the price inflation that each expansion brings to the in-game economy, it becomes easier and easier to accrue large amounts of gold. If someone had announced in classic that they had managed to make a million gold, it would of caused a sensation. Now however, its so commonplace as to not even be worthy of comment.

I am curious to know what the heavy hitters out there have set as their financial goal for Cataclysm. I have no doubt that there are people out there with tens of millions already, so that is hardly a challenge. Is one hundred million going to be the new milestone that separates the best from the rest, or is it higher still?

While it used to be a case of the sky being the limit, in regards to wow gold collecting, Blizz changed all that when they raised the character goldcap to 999,999g99s99c (1 million less a copper). Because at the same time they did this, they quietly instituted the same cap on Guildbanks (annoying Zamboni to no end.)

BTW when the change went through, guildbanks that had more than the limit still showed the greater amount. At this stage though, its probably wise to remove any excess, in the event that you're hacked, as they probably wouldn't be able to restore stolem gold above the limit.

So a player with a full roster of characters, each with thier own guildbank, is limited to no more than 20 x 1 million less 20 copper per account.

So while the sky is still the limit, a Star Trek quote sums up our limitations now... "The world is hollow, and I have touched the sky."

My goal is to have a million gold. I know that may seem small to some goblins but I play on the underpopulated faction on a very low population realm.

Last census I looked at showed us as in the bottom three realms when it comes to population. In all of Wotlk there were only two Shadowmournes on the realm. I'd often be one of only five players on my side in Wintergrasp etc

As it stands I'm the second richest player on my faction (The richest has been the glyph baron for years), only the second player I know of to hit gold cap during WOTLK and for me a million gold on a realm like that is the realistic challenge that is my 2011 goal.

Thats a nice way of looking at it Whitewolf. If you limit yourself to a single account, then the most you can accrue per server is a shade under 20 million. Of course there is nothing stopping you from repeating that process on four other servers to pump up your total gold holding to slightly less than 100 million if you have the time and inclination.

While I don't consider myself a heavy hitter, personally my goal was to hit the million and take it easy on the gold making just using the alchemy and tailoring cool downs. If I came across a great and easy way to make gold I would exploit it, but other than that, old fogies retirement home for me.
