Couldn't find a better place to post this, but what do you guys think!

I've picked the game back up but only have time for the 1 character I'm leveling to 85.

Assuming that I will only play 1 character, I'm having a difficult time picking 2 professions. It will be an orc hunter on a HIGH, so take into account queues for bgs and huge queues for instances.

I would like to have a prof that gives me something to do in the downtime and also can make a decent profit.

Considerations, leaning towards the first 2 combos:
1. Skinning/LW'ing - Since I will have no gathering toons, skinning provides some dps increase (albeit not the best) and will give me some stuff to do. LW is a good fit.
2. Enchanting/JC - I've done this before and found it fairly easy to make a profit with not too much playtime, does this still hold true?
3. Engineering/xxxxx - Engineering has always provided some fun stuff and the enchant looks good for hunters? Can anyone comment on the state of engineering? worth it? I'm assuming that the $ making opportunities are still small.
4. Inscription/xxxx - I think that milling is similar in function to prospecting which turns me off since you seem to need a lot of this. Also, I think this requires a lot of posting/reposting, is that still true?
3. Alchemy/Herb - Moneymaking of alchemy on my server seems to be meh these days outside of a boring 1x/day xmute, metas, etc. are not profitable. flasks are somewhat, potions not really. I don't think I want to herb or mine though.

Other ideas are welcome! Thanks for your help guys!

Assume I will have no alts, maybe a level 55dk?

Most people here would probably recommend Herb/Mining while leveling and switching to a craft at 85. The exp bonuses are big, and it lets you earn gold or save up materials for powerleveling a profession later. Hunters are also great for node farming.

Enchanting/JC has been quite profitable for my main on a medium-pop server. I'm not sure how well it would work on a high-pop server, since you're more likely to have lots of competition. I would not be making as much right now if I didn't also have an Alch to transmute and sell into other markets.

It's a good combo for stat points, though, since each profession gives you a good boost to a primary stat of your choice. Actually, all profs except Tailoring, Herb, Skinning, and Mining give about the same boost.

Alch and Engineering have the added bonus of a guaranteed epic BoP (trinket and helm), which might be important to you if you're not raiding regularly. This is the combo I'll be switching my lowbie hunter to at 85.

[Edit] Should add that there are only four crafted epics right now for hunters: 1 Alch, 1 Eng, and 2 LW. However, the LW ones are BoE, while the other two are BoP (profession-only).

I make more money with Alchemy and Jc..and I know you said only one choice..
but of course my next choice would be a death knight for mine/herb to feed my alch/jc..I am actually upset that my mine and herb are different characters now with minimap you can see both.

Of the ones you listed, 2.) is the clear winner.

If you are going to gather, dual gather (Herb + Mining). You get twice the income for the time. As you were warned, this is what I would suggest for leveling, no matter what you intend to do at 85.

I see what you are doing with the single gatherer feeding a matched crafting prof; but that is so... so... so WotLK. In Cata, where you can track both resources simultaneously, it is more lucrative to either be a dual gatherer OR a dual crafter.

I also suggest that once you are at 85, you stay dual gatherer (if you like it), or go with JC + (xmute Alchemy or Enchanting). I think there is a little more synergy with Alchemy, but Enchanting makes great gold just as a stand-alone prof.

Remember that as dual gatherer, you can build a leveling kit for Alchemy and for JC, with relativey little gold out of pocket.

Yeah, even though you said -NO- alts: A DK dual gatherer would be something to contemplate.

If I had one toon no alts (and some gold ;-) ) I would do Jcing/Inscription. The idea behind this is that you can make gold from Farmers work. If you are lucky you can find raw mats for cheap process them and make profit.

My best 2 professions for gold are by far Inscription and JC. I get a little bit extra from LW and Enchanting, but 85% of my income is from glyphs and gems. Just keep in mind that making gold with either of these professions is quite a large time sink, particularly with Inscription. To craft a week's worth of glyphs takes me at least 2 hours.
