Well at the moment, taking a look at the quantities generated from those DEs, you'll get almost 3 times as much essence as dust.

Big caveat, insufficient sample size.

I experimented doing this the way we all did saronite: make the rings, and disenchant them. Bought ~800g worth of ore, figured out a spreadsheet (minus the disenchanting %, b/c wowhead doesn't have them up yet). I was more interested in given [x] investment, what will [y] return be? I bought the obsidium ore at 8g10s per. After disenchanting everything, I'm left with about 860g worth of mats / uncut gems. I'd give or take 100g given market volatility.

For now, I think the market's just too unstable to reliably do this. 8g10s per ore is below average on my realm, as it averages beteween 12g-14g per ore. If you can get the ore cheap, wonderful. I could blow up the sample and see what happens, but given the small margin, I'm not really enthused about doing it.

I will grant that I didn't try AHing the JC stuff rather than disenchanting it. That's something I'll look into tomorrow, as I noticed when leveling other professions (such as blacksmithing), there's a strong market for those crafted BOEs.

I might try doing this with elementium, as it's running around 6g cheaper per ore.

Epic Late edit to add some numbers:
Obsidium 124 Prospects, 184 common gems, 8 rare gems.

Just selling uncommon gems atm, anticipate a switch to elementium in a couple days.

I was operating on elementium ore the whole time- sorry if it wasn't clear. And I think Pyrite is prospectable at 525 JC, which will be available once you have done 4 JC dailies.

I was thinking about the Elementium ore price. In my server it plummeted to 90 gold per stack, and im feeling very tempted just to buy it all at that price.

Once people start raiding the demand for blue gems will sky-rocket, and most probably so the price of Elementium

Go for it. The uncut green gems are selling hot on my server. The uncut blues are starting to move, but barely. I imagine they will pick up as people start to hit 85.

Yeah your right, managed to pick up 16 stacks even cheaper, 70g a stack, got to love impatient sellers. Making a killing out of this investment with the green gems, was also thinking of saving some blue gems to level, but ill just stick with the sell policy, while prices are all over the place, read a few posts already of people getting burned for holding stuff

BTW, it's Obsidian, not Obsidium. And my vote is for The Obsidian Overture. :)

At a quick glance I thought I read "Absurdium". My tired and bleary eyes have stared at the computer too much the past few days :)

My toon is a 525 miner and 450 enchanter. I have access to a 450 JCer on my girlfriends account.

My question is, I'm really good at mining and can do it all day while I'm doing other stuff. I've been making great gold the past couple days gathering and selling Obsidium ore or bars.

After reading this thread I was wondering if I should take advantage of my gf's JCer with all the Obsidium ore I get.

Currently getting 12g-19g per ore = 240g-380g per stack.

If so, should I DE the crafted items? Vendor? Or AH?

Thank you for your time.

At that price, it's going to be hard to make it back on anything crafted. Each gem uses up either 5 elementium ore or 3 1/3 obsidium ore. (We're still dealing with small sample sizes.) Most rings use 2 gems, so we'll need two prospects.

At the lowest end (12g, 6 2/3 ore), you're burning up 80g of ore to make 18g in gems to make 5g of jewelry. Crafting for vendoring doesn't work any more. In order for the jewelry to disenchant into 80g of mats, the essences would have to sell for 54g each. That 240g a stack is just a killer.

Thank you so much for the quick reply and great information. It really gives me a better understanding and insight into how this works. For now I will continue gathering.
