I decided I'd skill lvl an enchanter whenever cheap mats came my way. Suddenly I realized I need a golden pearl to go any farther (rod ingredient). On my server they average 10-20g.

The auction house has one for 160g. It's not too much compared to what the other materials cost, but I'm not going to reward someone selling at such a ridiculous markup.

This morning there were none. I decided to farm one. The dark gods that preside over craps and roulette tables frowned on me, 75 min and no golden pearl. I had to stop to go to work, but I checked the AH first, two for 200g each.

If I'm not going to pay 160g, I certainly wont pay 200g. But I worry that there's a group of people systematically buying them when they're reasonably priced, to flip. So my alternative seems to be more farming.

The insane part: I could have (and can) make much more than 200g in 75 min. It would be cheaper and faster and more fun to earn 200g and pay for the pearl than to farm for one. But unless I see a cheaper one soon, I KNOW I'm going to try to farm it again.

Any comments? Advice? Similar stories of behavior?

I think you already know the answer. You've already exceeded that pearls cost just in your opportunity cost invested. Then factor in the one you inevitably could of farmed is worth that much and you've now paid twice what you could of coughed up originally.

Golden Pearls are used in the +30 spellpower enchant, so they are usually 150g+.

If it makes you feel better I would have done the same thing, especially if the seller of the golden pearls is one of my usual AH competitors. While the opportunity costs might outweigh the benefits, I would farm it A) hoping to get it quick B) just because I don't want to enrich a competitor that is overpricing the item(at least on my server where they are 60-80 gold).

On a side note, I was happy to discover a few golden pearls on one of my toons that I apparently stashed away at some point while leveling back when they were alot less expensive on another server.

I broke down and bought the pearl. I justified it by adding it to my snatchlist, and have since bought 12 (someone sold a stack of 10 for 100g each) and sold 2 at a markup, undercutting the person I bought my first from. The demand should outstrip supply for both leveling enchanters and making scrolls when 4.0 hits, so I doubt I'll lose money whatever happens.

Golden Pearls are giving me some fun right now. Same as the OP, there were 2 listed for 200g each on my realm with someone spamming trade wanting to buy 4. I replied saying I have 3 on an alt and what is their offer. Well 20g for all 3 was very entertaining. I was then informed that they rufused to pay stupid prices for the things.

What I really should do is concentrate on selling and crafting, but the zest has gone out of it this week.
